Sherrill Heavily Outperforms Ciattarelli In Essex County: 2025 Governor Election

Both candidates made several campaign stops in Essex County in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Mikie Sherrill scored a heavy victory in her home district of Essex County during New Jersey’s 2025 governor election, unofficial results show.

Sherrill has been projected as the winner of New Jersey’s gubernatorial election. She faced challenges from Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican nominee, as well as third-party candidates Vic Kaplan (Libertarian Party) and Joanne Kuniansky (Socialist Workers Party).

Sherrill has gotten more than 1.79 million votes statewide. Ciattarelli has received more than 1.38 million, according to results from the Associated Press.

Although the results remain uncertified, Sherrill has claimed victory and Ciattarelli has conceded defeat. Read More: NJ Governor Election Results: Sherrill Wins, AP Says

In Essex County, Sherrill outperformed Ciattarelli by a margin of more than three-to-one.

With 566 of 575 districts reported as of late Tuesday night, here are the local vote totals for the four gubernatorial candidates appearing on the ballot, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Mikie Sherrill – 173,765
  • Jack Ciattarelli – 53,301
  • Vic Kaplan – 561
  • Joanne Kuniansky – 445

Voter turnout in Essex County was nearly 40 percent, with 229,252 ballots cast out of 563,312 registered voters as of Wednesday morning.

Both candidates made repeated campaign stops in Essex County in the months leading up to Election Day. Sherrill, an Essex County resident, cast her ballot at Hillside Elementary School in Montclair.

Ciattarelli conceded the race on Tuesday evening, calling Sherrill with a congratulatory message.

“I haven’t stopped believing because of the outcome of tonight’s election,” he told a crowd of supporters in Bridgewater.

“It is my hope that Mikie Sherrill has heard us in terms of what we need to do to make New Jersey that place where everybody can once again feel they can achieve their American dream,” Ciattarelli said.

Sherrill and her lieutenant governor running mate, Dale Caldwell, held a victory rally in East Brunswick on Tuesday night (watch the video below).

“I know these are tough times,” Sherrill said. “I know not everyone voted for me. But I am working for everyone. Every single one of you. When we all do better, we all do better.”

The congresswoman – who was once ranked as the “most bipartisan elected official in New Jersey” by the Common Ground Committee – recognized her Republican opponent for “stepping up” to the challenge of running for governor.

“I know how hard it can be to serve in these times,” she said.
