MHS Students Love Their Summer TV Shows
This article was written by MHS (now senior) Lena Rawley.

While summer is an excellent time to vacation, hang out with friends, explore the city, tan at the beach, go hiking in the woods, kayaking on some rugged river, or camp in an exotic location, some MHS students look forward to summer for reasons that are more air-conditioned and indoors.
What might trump kayaking rapids, you may say?

Turning on your television, that’s what.
“Summer TV shows are the best,” exclaims one sophomore. “I like them because I actually have time to watch them when they’re on.”

Summer television is a big hit with MHS students because they aren’t bogged down with schoolwork, so they actually have time to devote themselves to television. Without having to worry about being up too late because there’s a test or report due the next day, MHS students are free sit back, relax, and watch their favorite TV shows in real time.
MHS students have a multitude of favorite shows. Many students favor intense dramas. HBO’s True Blood, which showcases sexy vampires with sculpted abs parading around shirtless and biting people, and AMC’s Breaking Bad, the critically acclaimed show which follows a meth dealing chemistry teacher, and The Walking Dead, which, true to it’s name, is about the zombie apocalypse, are on the “must watch” list for nearly all MHS students.
What kid doesn’t love shirtless vampires, meth dealing chemistry teachers, and the zombie apocalypse (especially with all the current face-eating drama)?
“I’m obsessed with True Blood,” confesses one junior. “Alexander Skaarsgard is so good looking.”
Lots of students, anxiously await the return of lighthearted shows like MTV’s Awkward, which chronicles the (for lack of a better word) awkward experiences of Jenna Hamilton as she tries to balance all the insanely embarrassing and uncomfortable situations that mercilessly plague her life.
Awkward has been a serious hit with MHS students (particularly the girls). MTV’s attempt at creating a hilarious teen was far from a miss, considering a large number of MHS girls are seriously addicted.
“I love Awkward!” exclaims junior Courtney McMorrow. “So many lines in the show are repeatable and hilarious. The situations are exaggerated, but that’s what makes them funny. And it really adds a new twist to MTV…considering it’s not a trashy reality show!”
I’m an Awkward super fan as well. Since my two favorite TV passions, HBO’s Girls (the witty and hilarious chronicles of four young girls in New York city created by Lena Dunham) and AMC’s The Killing (a gripping crime drama in which they aggravatingly extended one murder investigation over two seasons), ended last Sunday, Awkward has moved to the top of my television priority list. It’s hard to see two of my favorite shows end. I had a difficult time saying good-bye to the gritty red headed detective Sara Linden from The Killing and the chubbily endearing Hanna Horvath of Girls, but saying hello again to Jenna Hamilton and Matty McKibbin softens the blow.
MTV is seemingly one of the go to channels for MHS students this summer. Teen Wolf, a thrilling drama series based on Michael J Fox’s 1985 movie, was released in the summer of 2011 and has returned for its second season. With riveting action every episode and an attractive and talented cast, it takes up a lot of space on the DVRs of numerous students.
“I can’t wait to watch MTV’s Teen Wolf,” says junior Krista Frias. “I didn’t think I would like it but I ended up being addicted. The plot is really dramatic and interesting. Every episode is entertaining. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the guys are all really cute.”
The summer of 2012 is going to be three months of non-stop athletic excitement, as well. The 2012 London Olympic Games kick off on July 27th and continue till August 12th. To top it off, soccer fans also have the delight of watching the European soccer teams battle it out in the UEFA Euro.
“I don’t really watch TV shows during the summer,” concedes junior Oliver Murphy, “but of course I’m watching the Euro right now and I’m really excited to watch the Olympics when they begin in July.”
You don’t have to kayak down a river, spend the day dodging riptides in the ocean, or explore a new city to have fun in the summer. While yes, it’s great to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, it also can be just as fun spend a little one on one time with your favorite television characters in the nice air conditioned cocoon of your TV room.
