MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair issued some snow-related reminders for local residents on Tuesday.

Weather forecasters are calling for frigid temperatures across New Jersey this week, including in Essex County. Some areas of North Jersey may get several inches of snow on Tuesday.

Montclair is expected to get daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Here are some tips to keep the town’s streets and sidewalks safe, according to an advisory from the township:

  • Plowing and treating township-owned roads
  • Clearing snow around municipal buildings and facilities
  • Roads are plowed curb-to-curb when no cars are parked on the street

Resident & Property Owner Responsibilities

  • Clear snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways
  • Keep fire hydrants and storm drains near your property clear
  • If your sidewalk leads to a crosswalk, ensure it’s fully cleared for safe access

Timing Matters

  • Sidewalks must be cleared within 12 hours of daylight after snowfall ends.
  • If ice cannot be safely removed, it must be treated with salt, sand, or similar material.

How Much to Clear

  • Sidewalks should be cleared the full width, or at least 48 inches wide, to allow safe pedestrian passage.

Please Don’t

  • Shovel snow back into the street - it’s unsafe and prohibited by township code.
