United Way Holds Free Mentor Training in North Essex

United Way of Northern New Jersey is holding free mentor training classes in Montclair for individuals interested in becoming a mentor. 

The program prepares local residents with the communication and problem-solving skills to serve as an effective mentor.  The four-part series consists of classes held on October 8, 10, 15, and 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the United Way Building, 60 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair. Individuals must attend all sessions in order to receive a completion certificate.

United Way is committed to growing the number of mentors in the northern New Jersey region, in conjunction with national efforts to boost the ranks of mentors. Mentors are proven to make a difference in helping individuals realize their potential, both personally and professionally.

The mentor training program provided through United Way Mentor Center is widely considered a model for preparing individuals to be effective mentors. Area residents who have taken the class say the program enhances their interpersonal and communication skills. 

The training equips individuals with the fundamentals of mentoring and provides the basic skills needed to provide youth, professional, and financial mentoring. 

“Being a mentor and helping someone achieve his or her potential is one of the best ways to have a positive and lasting contribution in your community,” said United Way Mentor Center Director Mary Emilius.  “Sometimes all a person needs is positive support from someone else. This class is an opportunity to learn how you can positively impact someone’s life by sharing your time and talents.”
