3. Henry Doremus House. A historic home with a fantastic story to match.
One reviewer from Montville, NJ said: "I viewed the Henry Doremus House on the weekend of the Morris County Historical Homes Tour. It was open for the Pathways to History celebration and during the July 4th celebration. The Montville Historical Society runs the event and docents are dressed in period costume to conduct the tours. The home is a restoration of an old Stone Dutch House and is circa 1760. Documents found in Washington's expense accounts for the year 1780 confirm his payment of $40 to Mrs. Doremus for his stay June 25-27, 1780 following the Battle of Springfield. Alexander Hamilton, as well as, 40 aids and 2,000 Continental Army soldiers also stayed on the premise. The house which features artifacts mostly from the 1800's, three first level rooms including fireplaces and a kitchen and two upstairs bedrooms is filled with interesting objects. The stairs leading to the bedrooms are somewhat steep, curved and have narrow foot surfaces making climbing challenging. The Montville Historical Society volunteers who conduct the tours are well versed in the history of the home, it's artifacts, the time period, the restoration and the Doremus Family. The Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund granted $230,.591 for the restoration which included the exterior masonry, repointing, fireplace hearth, window framing, wood shingle roofing, etc.. It's a wonderful example of life during the American Revolution and an opportunity to be in closer touch with the history of the area. Check with the Montville Historical Society for the next tour opening. The tours are offered on a donation basis and photos are not allowed in the building."
