Live Turkey Crashes Through Windshield, Startles Driver on Route 80

Driver suffered scratches as bird smashed through glass and ended up in backseat.

State police said a Pequannock driver was startled and suffered scrapes and cuts after a live turkey crashed through her windshield and ended up alive in her backseat on Route 80 in Montville Monday morning.

The turkey was struck near mile-marker 47.4 in the middle lane of the highway by a tractor trailer around 8 a.m., according to Sgt. Adam Grossman.

"The turkey went airborne right into the front windshield," he said.

The turkey broke through half the windshield's glass and damaged the front hood of the 34-year-old female driver's Nissan, Grossman said. It then ended up in the backseat where it "was still alive in the vehicle."

"Unfortunately, the turkey did not survive," Grossman said, noting that the turkey had died on its own and not by police.

Grossman said he was not sure whether the woman's scratches were from the turkey or the broken glass but that she did not need hospital treatment.
