BREAKING: Local Press Denied Access at NJ Festivals Amid Shrinking Support
JERSEY CITY, NJ (Oct. 14, 2025) — In a move sparking outrage among independent journalists and longtime media contributors, organizers of two of New Jersey’s largest cultural events—the Rock 'n Ribs Festival and the Jersey City Jazz Concert—have denied press access to SJ News Group this past summer, citing “ridiculous protocols.”
The Jersey City Jazz Concert, in particular, raised eyebrows this year. Dave Zimmerman—the Oz -like figure behind the scenes—was said to be orchestrating this past summer weekend logistics.

The denial comes despite years of coverage by these same outlets, including past support for city government initiatives and political campaigns. One veteran reporter, who previously covered Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s multiple runs for office, described the snub as “a slap in the face to the very people who helped build these events’ reputations.”

Adding insult to injury, a request for press credentials to enter through a secure back entrance to protect expensive camera equipment was reportedly denied without explanation. Mr. Zimmerman seemed more interested in critiquing the press.

“This isn’t just about access. “It’s about respect. We’ve covered these events when they were small, when they needed us. On our own time and dime, now they’re big, and suddenly the press isn’t important?”
“Shame on you guys. You built this on community and coverage, and now you’re shutting the door on both.”
Perhaps the most surprising snub came from the Rock 'n Ribs Festival. SJ News coverage of Southern Rock Groups dates back to when Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels performed at Great Adventure in support of the troops back in 2010. “We were there when it mattered,” the reporter recalled. “Back when we were working for WABC Radio, we helped amplify these moments. Now we’re treated like outsiders.”
The cost of covering events in New Jersey has also skyrocketed, with tolls, gas, and parking fees making it increasingly difficult for independent media to operate. “Just getting to the venue costs more than some outlets make in a day,” one freelance photographer noted. New Jersey events are disappearing in an alarming rate due to mismanagement and cost. Don't be too quick in discarding Media or Press gentleman .......
