Burlington County DWI Stop Leads To Illegal Handgun Arrest: Police

The loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle after the driver failed to perform field sobriety testing, authorities said.

MOUNT LAUREL, NJ - A motor vehicle stop for an alleged impaired driver in Burlington County on Sunday morning resulted in the discovery of an illegally possessed - and loaded - handgun, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released by police, was charged with driving under the influence and unlawful possession of a handgun, Mount Laurel police said.

At around 2 a.m, a motor vehicle stop was conducted on a vehicle traveling near Church Road and Route 73 in Mount Laurel, police said. The officer observed signs of impairment while speaking with the driver, police added.

After the driver failed to perform standardized field sobriety testing and was placed under arrest, a loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle, police said.

The driver was taken to Mount Laurel police headquarters and later transported to the hospital, police said. He was eventually released to a friend and given his charges for a later court date.
