BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — For the third time this summer, a tornado hit Burlington County as the remnants of Ida hit New Jersey on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

An EF-1 tornado was identified from Edgewater Park in Burlington County to Bristol in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service announced Thursday afternoon.

Peak winds were estimated to be up to 90 mph, according to the weather service. More details will be announced soon, officials said.

“A tornado moved through towns along the county’s western riverfront towns of Edgewater Park, Beverly, Burlington Township and Burlington City,” Burlington County spokesman David Levinsky said in a prepared statement Thursday afternoon, shortly before the announcement by the National Weather Service.

Previously, officials said they couldn’t confirm that a tornado had struck Burlington County. Tornadoes have also been reported in Gloucester County and Mercer County in New Jersey, and Montgomery County, and Bucks County, both in Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service. It is the third time this summer a tornado was reported in Burlington County. The first was reported on July 17, when an EF1 tornado hit Springfield, according to the National Weather Service. That tornado last six minutes, peaked at between 80 and 90 miles an hour, and no fatalities or injuries were reported. Read more here: Tornado Struck Burlington County Saturday Night, Officials Say

The second was reported on July 29, when a tornado was sighted over Burlington.

EF1 tornadoes generally see wind gusts of between 65 and 85 mph. More about the different tornado grades can be found at weather.gov.

In the most recent tornado reported Wednesday night, no injuries were reported in Burlington County, and damages in the county were mostly minor, according to the Burlington County Office of Emergency Management.

One Burlington Township home suffered substantial damage to its roof and siding, and a personal car and fence were also damaged by downed trees, officials said.

Burlington County Central Communications received 366 total 911 calls, 89 additional emergency calls, and another 881 inbound administrative calls. Dispatchers also assisted with a total of 877 police, fire and medical emergency incidents, including four water rescues.

Burlington County reported the following road closures:

  • Union Mill Road in Mount Laurel was closed between Briggs Road and Hartford Road due to flooding, but it is now open;
  • Beverly Road, between Grayson Place and Tina Lane, in Burlington Township was also closed due to a downed pole and wires; and
  • Amico Island Park in Delran was closed due to flooding.

The storm that brought similar damage across the state led Gov. Phil Murphy to declare a statewide state of emergency Wednesday night. At least one person died, and two others were missing in Passaic, as floodwaters from the Passaic River inundated part of the city.
