Police Officer, 23, Unexpectedly Dies Just Months After Beginning Career In Burlington Co.
Samuel Irvin was appointed to his hometown's police department last winter. He represented 'the best of us,' according to Mansfield's mayor.
MANSFIELD, NJ — Samuel Irvin, a young officer only beginning his career in law enforcement, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, officials said. The Mansfield patrol officer was 23.
Local officials approved Irvin's appointment to the Mansfield Township Police Department last January, at Chief Eric Campbell's recommendation. He recently graduated from the police academy and began training to serve his hometown.
"Sam represented the best of us," Mayor Marcial Mojena said Monday in a letter. "He was loved and respected by all, and his loss will leave a void in our hearts forever."

Mansfield officials haven't disclosed a cause of death. But Mojena thanked Campbell and fellow Mansfield officers who stood by Irvin's family Sunday at the hospital. The Municipal Building's flag will remain at half-mast until a memorial service honoring the young officer's life.
Irvin was engaged and an expectant father, according to Mansfield PD.
