MARLTON, NJ — An acclaimed Philadelphia doughnut chain is showing signs of progress toward opening its first South Jersey store.

Federal Donuts & Chicken has been planning to enter South Jersey since at least spring 2023, when the Marlton Square shopping center listed the chain as a future tenant. That plan is still in place, but it's unknown when the shop will open, a Federal Donuts spokesperson told Patch on Monday.

On Tuesday night, the Evesham Municipal Utilities Authority is set to decide whether to approve new water and sewer lines for Federal Donuts in Marlton Square — an indication that the long-stalled doughnut shop is moving forward.

Five hungry Philadelphians founded Federal Donuts in 2011, expanding to roughly 10 locations in and around the city. "FedNuts" serves doughnuts each day with a changing menu of hot, fresh flavors — along with fried chicken and coffee.

In spring 2023, Marlton Square began listing Federal Donuts as a future tenant, showing the chain's intentions to open a South Jersey shop.

A month later, a Federal Donuts spokesperson told Patch that the Marlton location was projected to open by the end of 2023. But the months went by without any indications of the shop working toward opening.

As South Jersey's stomachs rumbled, Federal Donuts continued expanding its fresh-baked footprint. Late last year, the chain rebranded to "Federal Donuts & Chicken," while also announcing a Las Vegas location that has since opened.

But it now appears that South Jersey still has a date to the doughnut dance.

Franchisees Mark Heinz and Deborah Grady will own the Marlton Square shop, which will operate next to DryBar and TD Ameritrade.

Marlton Square is located at 300 Route 73, Marlton.
