Laurel Brook Rehab & Healthcare Launches Orthopedic Recovery Program
OrthoWIN Subacute Care Model Bridges the Gap Between Hospital and Home

Laurel Brook Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center has introduced OrthoWIN, a highly specialized subacute care program for orthopedic recovery. Michael Rhee, MD, and Adam Schindelheim, MD, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) specialists, are directing the initiative at the Mount Laurel skilled nursing facility, which also recently has been named among America’s Best Nursing Homes 2025 by Newsweek.
Located at 3718 Church Road, the 220-bed skilled nursing center provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care. Laurel Brook’s PM&R-centered model, with the support of an interdisciplinary care team, caters to patients recovering from a range of orthopedic surgeries and injuries; it is ideal for patients with co-morbidities and those without the social support to recover at home independently. PM&R, also known as Physiatry, focuses on the restoration of health and function with an integrated treatment plan including pain management and physical therapy.
“OrthoWIN responds to a direct call from healthcare systems for this type of skilled nursing specialization,” said Kate Bauer, regional director of market development with Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports Laurel Brook. “Laurel Brook’s goal is to help its area hospital partners address the growing volume of joint replacement care and fracture care patients who are unable to transition directly home following a surgery or injury.”

The OrthoWIN platform – with its clear quality measures and a standardized approach – features a guided PM&R plan, seven-days-per-week therapy services as warranted, coordination with a patient’s surgical team on preferences, and wound care management. Under the leadership of Dr. Rhee and Dr. Schindelheim, OrthoWIN’s “whole body” approach offers customized support to manage complex cases and co-morbidities; it can integrate seamlessly with Laurel Brook’s physician-led Cardiac Care and Pulmonary Care programs, for example. OrthoWIN also includes patient and caregiver education, as well as a virtual or in-person home evaluation prior to discharge.
Dr. Rhee, who is board certified in PM&R and brain injury medicine, has two decades of medical experience in acute and subacute rehabilitation hospitals and facilities. He previously served as the Director of Brain Injury Services at Penn Medicine. Board certified in PM&R, Dr. Schindelheim has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Schindelheim is affiliated with Cooper University Health Care, Camden.

“Laurel Brook is fortunate to have Dr. Rhee and Dr. Schindelheim lead this new initiative, supported by a dedicated team of talented specialists,” said Bauer. “With OrthoWIN, Laurel Brook is well-positioned to bridge the gap between hospital and home."
