Moorestown Native Becomes 1st American To Win Broad Street Run In 30 Years

Kevin McDonnell​ was 1 of more than 40K participants in the nation's biggest 10-mile road race.

PHILADELPHIA — A Moorestown native became the first American in three decades to win the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run.

Kevin McDonnell finished in 47 minutes, 32.32 seconds Sunday in Philadelphia. He was among more than 40,000 participants in the Broad Street Run — the nation's biggest 10-mile road race. The Cherry Hill resident finished nearly 12 seconds ahead of Zack Holden, the second-place finisher.

Previously, no American had been overall winner since 1994, when Willingboro native Eric Lorenz finished the race in 49 minutes, 12 seconds.

McDonnell grew up in Moorestown and graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 2008. He competed collegiately for Saint Joseph's, finishing 10th in the 10,000-meter at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

After college, McDonnell spent seven years away from competitive running to focus on his career and personal life. But he decided to return to running in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

McDonnell had competed in the Broad Street Run once before, finishing 12th in the race in 2022.
