Based on preliminary investigation, a Peterbilt tractor trailer was traveling south on the Turnpike at 3:59 p.m. when the driver changed lanes into the left shoulder to avoid a crash, Postorino said.

The truck driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a Toyota SUV, Postorino said. The Peterbilt then continued forward, jackknifed and struck nine other vehicles that were in traffic.
