Renowned Bakery To Permanently Close In Burlington County

MEDFORD, NJ — Maggie Moose Bakery, a hub for sweet treats and gifts, will soon permanently close, the business announced Monday.

The bakery, which doubles as a gift boutique, expects to shutter by the end of September. A closing date will be announced as it gets closer.

Candy Vargas-Thibeau grew up locally, graduating in 1992 from Shawnee High School in Medford. But Maggie Moose came about when she and her family lived in Canada.

The original store opened in Port Hope — a small town about 90 minutes east of Toronto. It became well-known. Visiting Americans stopped in for gelato and gourmet popcorn, as customers around the world ordered fudge.

After the Canada shop closed, Vargas-Thibeau's local friends encouraged her to bring Maggie Moose to the Medford area. The shop opened in 2021. But that time is winding down, with ownership hoping to find a healthier work-life balance.

"We have come to realize that the financial rewards this business has offered do not align with our personal quality of life and we know we had to make some hard choices that support our overall well-being first and foremost," said Monday's closing announcement, signed by "Maggie Moose."

Maggie Moose thanked staff and customers. Employees were informed of the pending closure before Monday's announcement, according to the business.

All orders that have been placed will be fulfilled, and gift cards will be honored until the closure.

The hours have not changed, but any adjustments will be announced on Maggie Moose's Facebook page.

"Closing a business is a very tedious process," the business said. "It can be overwhelming as well, so we request that when you come in over the next few weeks, we keep it positive and look on the bright side, because there definitely is always a bright side! That's the foundation of Maggie Moose!"
