MOORESTOWN, NJ — An American Women’s History Specialist will speak during a virtual event hosted by the Alice Paul Institute (API) later this month, the institute announced.

Elizabeth A. Novara will speak during a virtual event at 6 p.m. Sept. 23. Registration is free and open to the public at www.alicepaul.org.

Novara is an American Women’s History Specialist in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, for “Marketing the Movement,” an examination of the innovative tactics used by the women’s suffrage movement to gain public attention and advocate for the right to vote.

During her presentation, Novara will draw examples from the Library’s exhibition, “Shall Not Be Denied: Women Fight for the Vote.”

She will highlight the library’s significant suffrage-related collections, including the archives of the National Woman’s Party.

Novara will be joined by API Board Member Lisa Hendrickson, who will discuss her own research that resulted in API’s traveling exhibit, also titled “Marketing the Movement.”

API took over the trademark of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) after that organization dissolved last year.

Alice Paul and Lucy Burns co-founded the NWP in 1916, and they played a significant role in advocating for the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gained women the right to vote.

The NWP later advocated for other measures around gender equality nationally and internationally, including the Equal Rights Amendment.

Moving forward, API said it will highlight its history and legacy in its ongoing programs that teach the public the history of the ongoing movement for gender equality and encourage girls to develop their leadership skills.
