15 Years For Morris Twp Man That Stole 5 Guns: Prosecutor

The man, who was a previously convicted robber, was barred from owning guns, officials said.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Morris Township man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail, after a robbery where he stole five guns and jewelry, Morris County Prosecutor's Fredrick M. Knapp said.

Casey R. Powers, 35, from Morris Township, was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years in state prison, stemming from his involvement in a 2015 robbery in Mount Olive.

On Dev. 2 2015, Powers brought into a Mount Olive home through a read deck window and stole jewelry, one handgun, two shotguns, and two rifles, Knapp said. During the investigation, some of the jewelry, two rifles and one shot gun were recovered.

Powers was found guilty in an April trial of burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, four counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, six counts of theft, criminal mischief, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and hindering prosecution. Because he had a prior conviction, Powers was also found guilty of five counts unlawful possession of a weapon, and five counts of certain persons not to possess a firearm.

The Mount Olive Police Department, Morris Township Police Department, Jefferson Township Police Department, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and Morris County Prosecutor’s Office worked together to investigate the robbery.
