$50M Lab Conducting Snack Research Opens In Morris County
Nearly $50 million has been invested in the development of products and packaging for consumer favorites such as Oreo and Sour Patch Kids.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — One of the world’s largest snack producers just opened a new innovation center in Morris County that will be dedicated to snack research.
On Monday, May 1, Mondelez International executives were joined by U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, and local officials to cut the ribbon on the research and development center on Route 10 in Whippany.
Mondelez's top scientists will conduct research and development in the new facility for some of the many snacks that Mondelez manufactures, including Oreos, Chips Ahoy!, Nutter Butter, Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish, with nearly $50 million invested in building upgrades.

"As one of the world’s largest snack producers with so many iconic brands that Americans know and love, we look forward to them unlocking the magic with their new facility here in Hanover Township," Morris County Commissioner Director John Krickus said.
The renovation transformed a 150,000-square-foot building that had previously served as a research and development facility for Mondelez subsidiary Cadbury.

Employees celebrated this significant milestone with a milk and OREO cookie toast, a tree planting ceremony led by the site's Green Team focused on sustainability and a commemorative beam signing at the site.
The property now employs approximately 50 research and development specialists to create new snacks, flavors, and varieties, from concept to mass production.
Among the many planned innovations, the Whippany team will play a key role in advancing electric baking technology, which will support the company's 2050 goal of net zero carbon emissions across its value chain.
“I’m thrilled to celebrate Mondelez International’s investment in New Jersey with the opening of this Global Innovation Center,” U.S. Senator Robert Menendez said. “Not only will this facility be a hub for research and innovation, but it will also provide a boost to the state’s economy and create job opportunities for New Jerseyans.”
Mondelez International has a long history and deep roots in New Jersey, dating back many decades. The company still bases its North American operations at a facility in the neighboring town of East Hanover.
“It is wonderful to see Mondelez International open a new Global Innovation Center right here in our community,” Sherrill said. “This large investment reinforces the longstanding partnership between Mondelez and the thriving business community in this area. I am proud to have the snacking powerhouse choose NJ-11 for such a significant global facility.”
