Reader Offers An Ode to Irene

A reader offers her poetic take on this weekend storm.

And now, an ode to Irene, from Dara Ely, a reader of Morristown Patch. Her family also owns

Good Night Irene

Twas the day of Irene and all up the coast,
New Jersey awaited the storm’s might and boast

The hurricane chasers flew straight through the eye,
To help us predict the where, when and why

Christie announced: “Get away from the shore!”
But the surfers saw waves and rode “just one more”

The highways were busy with folks heading west,
Those who decided the governor knew best

Others had flocked to their neighborhood store,
But, batteries, water and plywood – no more!

Now it’s flashlights and candles, tucked in each room,
As downed power lines and darkness do loom

A storm such as this, is for many a first,
We hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

The rain will be raging on Saturday night,
But come Monday morning the sun will shine bright

While this poem is lighthearted we must not forget,
Irene's not a joke and on that you can bet

So help out your neighbors, your family and friends,
And even a stranger that you've never met!

I’ll quote the old song, wait for times more serene:
Irene good night, and good night Irene.
