'Distracted' Walkers Could Be Ticketed In Morristown

Too many pedestrians moving around unsafely recently, police chief says.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Pedestrians and drivers have been cohabitating in Morristown for decades, helping to make the downtown area a thriving place of business and entertainment.

But pedestrians who use their cell phones while walking across streets have become more of a hazard in recent years, and Morristown wants to do something about it.

Police will be cracking down on pedestrians – as well as drivers – who are distracted while moving about the town to ensure crosswalk safety, according to morristowngreen.com.

The Morristown Police Department and Morristown Partnership will also create an educational campaign about curbside safety with $15,000 in funding from the state Division of Highway Safety, the report said.

According to the report, Police Chief Peter Demnitz told the Morristown Council Tuesday night he doesn’t want to ticket pedestrians, but has more frequently seen unsafe behavior around town recently.
