ROCKAWAY, NJ — A lucky penny led to a whole lot of extra change, when one Rockaway woman used her lucky penny on a scratch-off lottery ticket worth $1 million.

Jean Ball of Rockaway has been playing scratch-offs for years, but had never won big before. That changed when she bought a $20 Instant Cash Millionaire ticket, and used her "lucky penny" to scratch it off.

At first, Ball assumed there had been a mistake; there was no way she'd just won $1 million. Ball checked the rules on the back of the tickets and on the lottery website, before going to her local lottery retailer to check that it was real— and it was.

Ball said she would use the money to be financially secure going forward, and planned on staying at her job and continuing taking care of her mother.

The scratch-off was purchased at Quick Check on West Main Street in Rockaway.
