Mail-In Ballots For Morris County Voters Sent Out: What To Know

Mail-in ballots for the general election were distributed this week, and voters can return them at any time until Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Morris County has begun sending mail-in ballots to voters who requested them this week.

Voters should expect to receive their ballots over the next two weeks and can return their ballots at any time to the Board of Elections or deposit them in an official ballot drop box until Nov. 7 at 8 p.m.

If you want to vote before New Jersey's General Election Day, Morris County has more than a dozen secure drop boxes where voters can leave their ballots.

Here is a list of drop-box locations.

The ballot drop boxes are all located outside and are constantly monitored. They look like USPS Blue Mailboxes, but they're red, white and blue, and they say "Morris County Official Ballot Drop Box." County representatives will collect the ballots.

When collecting and transferring ballots back to the Board of Elections, all security precautions will be taken, officials said.

Every active registered voter is eligible to request a vote-by-mail ballot. If you would like to receive your ballot by mail, you must request your ballot not less than seven days before an election.

Otherwise, you must get your vote-by-mail ballot in person from the county clerk by 3 p.m. the day before Election Day.

Here is the timeline for this year's election:

  • Sept. 23: Commencement of mailing of mail-in ballots for the general election
  • Oct. 17: Last day to register to vote for the general election
  • Oct. 24: On or before this date, applications for the appointment of challengers for the general election shall be filed with the County Board of Elections.
  • Oct. 25: Mailing of Sample Ballots.
  • Oct. 31: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot application (formerly civilian absentee ballot) by mail for the general election. (This is for those who have moved within Morris County or did not receive a mail-in ballot.)
  • Oct. 28 – Nov. 5: Early voting period for early in-person voting
  • Nov. 6 – by 3 p.m.: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot application (formerly civilian absentee ballot) in person for the general election. (This is for those who have moved within Morris County or did not receive a mail-in ballot.)
  • Nov. 7: General Election Day
    • Polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • In-person mail-in ballots must be returned to the Board of Elections or deposited in an official ballot drop box by 8 p.m.
    • Mail-in ballots sent by the United States Postal Service must be postmarked on or before Nov. 7, and received by Nov. 13.
