Man In Dover Police Beating Video Sentenced: Prosecutor

Cyprian Luke​, 19, was sentenced nearly 3 months after a video of him being beaten by police gained widespread attention online.

DOVER, NJ — An Irvington man seen on video being hit by Dover police was sentenced today in Morris County Superior Court, Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp said.

Cyprian Luke, 19, was sentenced to two years of probation and to complete the "Abuse Ceases Today" program, and to attend counseling services through the Caring Partners of Morris/Sussex. Luke faced charges of contempt, simple assault, and criminal mischief.

Luke gained notoriety when a video of him being hit by Dover police while restrained drew widespread attention in May. According to Knapp, Luke gave a fake name to officers in an attempt to avoid a domestic violence warrant.

The investigation into Luke began in February 2019. According to Knapp, Luke admitting to getting into an altercation with the mother of his child, damaging her car and violating a pretrial release agreement to avoid contact with her.

"The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to seeking justice and protection for victims of domestic violence and holding domestic violence perpetrators accountable for their conduct," Knapp said.
