Morristown Handyman Sexually Assaulted Child While Working

A Morristown handyman hired to work in a family's home in Bergen County has been convicted of sexually assaulting a child.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A handyman hired to work in a family’s home in Bergen County has been convicted of sexually assaulting a minor who lives there, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Alejandro Velasquez-Martinez, of Morristown, was convicted on Friday, May 12, following a four-day trial in Bergen County Superior Court.

According to Musella, Velasquez-Martinez faces at least 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole for the assault.

At the trial, the state presented six witnesses, including two expert witnesses, and argued that on the morning of Aug. 19, 2019, Velasquez-Martinez sexually assaulted a minor under the age of 13 while doing tile repairs in her family's Demarest home.

Assistant Prosecutors Meredith Kunz and Katie McLaughlin of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit handled the prosecution, while Velasquez-Martinez was represented by Scott D. Finckenauer, Esq.

Velasquez-Martinez was convicted of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault by contact, and endangering the welfare of a child, Musella said.

Velasquez-Martinez's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2023, before Judge Remson.
