​Morristown High Grad John A. Mowbray III Dies at Age 55

MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY — John Alfred Mowbray III, age 55, died after a battle with lung cancer at Compassionate Care Hospice of Saint Claire’s Hospital in Dover on July 30. John graduated from Morristown High School and later from Florida Institute of Technology.

He held his Two Hundred Ton Marine Captain’s license with a Towing permit. He also held his Marine Engineer’s license, and pursued a career as a Marine Engineer with Tyco Corporation.

Later, John sailed solo from the New Jersey Shore to the Azores across the Atlantic Ocean on a 42 foot Beneteau. Prior to his work as a Marine Engineer, he conducted Promotional Education tours of the Erie Canal. John was an accomplished carpenter, and he remodeled and restored several homes.

John was also an adept mechanic, and for several years he was employed by Harley Davidson building motorcycles. John was an avid water skier; he particularly enjoyed teaching his sons, nieces and nephews to water ski.

John was a loving son, father and brother. He is survived by his mother, Jean Mowbray Caffrey; by his two sons, John Alfred Mowbray IV, and his wife, Megan, and Luke Michael Mowbray and his fiancé,Alex Pettit. John is also survived by his three sisters, Gail Mowbray Wills, and her husband, Brian; Anne Mowbray Cooney, and her husband, Kevin, and Laurie Mowbray Fritze, and her husband, Robert. John is survived by eight nieces and one nephew.
