Morristown High on Newsweek Top 1,000

MHS ranks 953rd in the country, according to list.

While "We're No. 953!" might not have quite the same ring to it as "We're No. 1!" Morristown High School is among some pretty exclusive company this year, ranking among the 1,000 best high schools in America in Newsweek's annual poll.

Seventy four New Jersey high schools made the cut, including 10 in Morris County: Morristown, Montville (847), Hanover Park (738), Whippany Park (644), Kinnelon (457), West Morris Mendham (291), Madison (276), West Morris Central (226), Mountain Lakes (207) and Chatham (183).

Millburn High School, in Essex County, , coming in behind three magnet or selective high schools. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, a selective high school in Bowling Green, KY, ranked No. 1 on this year's list.

According to the magazine, “this year’s ranking highlights the best 1,000 public high schools in the nation—the ones that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The list is based on six components provided by school administrators: graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and AP courses offered per student (5 percent).
