Morristown Physical Therapist Saves Choking Baby in Roadside Emergency

When Nicole Witzig drove by a stopped SUV, she knew something was wrong.

Nicole Witzig’s instincts kicked in, and that’s all she needed.

The physical therapist who works at Morristown Medical Center was driving home from work recently when she spotted an SUV pulled over on the side of the road. As Witzig drove by, she noticed a woman holding a one-year-old girl upside down.

Witzig pulled over and was told the baby wasn’t breathing due to an obstruction. Witzig took hold of the baby and gave her one blow to the back, clearing the mucus that was stuck in the baby’s throat as a result of bronchitis.

The mother had been hitting the child’s back but not hard enough, Morristown Medical Center said in a Facebook post, and thanks to Witzig’s knowledge of first aid, the child is doing fine.
