MORRISTOWN, NJ — Nino Coniglio, the acclaimed pizzaiolo known for his award-winning pizza in Brooklyn, has returned to his New Jersey roots to open Coniglio's Old Fashioned, a family-owned pizzeria on Morristown's South Street, in partnership with his wife Shaelyn.

Since he was 14, Coniglio has been making pizza. He first discovered pizza while watching his grandmother Josephina make it for him and his cousins.

Coniglio said his first job as a teen was running Johnny's Pizza, and he later pursued his passion for pizza by working for notable NYC pizzerias such as Numero 28, Caccio E Vino and Moonstruck.

Coniglio is now a world-renowned pizzaiolo with over ten awards as a US and World Champion Pizza Maker.

Coniglio won the title of "Best Pizza in New Jersey" at the third annual Pizza Bowl on Feb. 4, just two months after opening Coniglio's Old Fashioned. The Pizza Bowl was created by Big Guy Madesen, who started the annual event during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The third annual Pizza Bowl featured five rounds of competition for New Jersey's best pizza and best meatballs, each with 52 judges, and a final round with 40 VIP judges, including actor Joseph Donofrio, who played young Tommy in "Goodfellas."

The competition, organized by Jersey Pizza Joints, a Facebook group with 68,000 members, pitted more than 3,100 restaurants against one another in a bracket-voting matchup.

Throughout the nine-hour event, 250 judges sampled food from 29 finalists, as well as over 250 pizzas and 2000 meatballs.

Many of Coniglio's famous pizzas are available on the Coniglio Old Fashioned menu, including the classic Brooklyn, which includes mozzarella, tomato sauce, Parmesan Reggiano, and basil, and the Meatball Ricotta, which includes house-made meatballs, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and ricotta dollops.

Other menu highlights include Italian classics like eggplant and chicken parmigiana and pasta dishes such as Bucatini Siciliano, Fusilli Pistachio Pesto and the family's Spaghetti and Meatballs recipe.

Coniglio said his core philosophy is based on three things: high-quality ingredients, the order in which they are used, and taking the time to master the true alchemy of dough making.

Coniglio described the pizza recipe as simple, using fresh ingredients such as real San Marzano tomatoes and local mozzarella. This recipe has served him well in all of his Brooklyn pizzerias and serves as the foundation for Coniglio's Old Fashioned in Morristown.

The restaurant is located in Morristown at 11 South Street and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for delivery.
