Rally Against Gun Violence Planned For Morristown

Morris County Moms Demand Action invites the community to Morristown Town Hall on May 13 for a peaceful rally against gun violence.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Carrying homemade signs, gun control activists will use a Mother's Day rally in Morris County to continue their campaign to renew an assault weapons ban.

Morris County Moms Demand Action invites everyone to join them at a community event to remember the countless lives lost to gun violence.

The rally will take place on Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Morristown Town Hall, located at 200 South Street.

"This Mother’s Day, we don’t want cards. We don’t want flowers. We want Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban," event organizers said. "In 1994, Congress passed a bipartisan assault weapons ban and now we want Congress to once again find that common ground and reinstate the bipartisan assault weapons ban."

Moms Demand Action is a nonpartisan grassroots movement of Americans working to prevent gun violence. It was founded by Shannon Watts, a mother, in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

"We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe," Moms Demand Action said.

The rally is being held in response to recent mass shootings, such as the Covenant School in Nashville on March 27, which killed three students and three adults, and the Old National Bank in Louisville on April 10, which killed five people and injured eight others.

“People are fed up with gun extremist politicians who are saying there’s nothing we can do and yet we know they’re putting gun maker profits above public safety," Watts said.

Since its inception, Moms Demand Action has grown in popularity and now has chapters in almost every state.

All interested community members are asked to park behind the town hall before the Saturday event.

"I’m really inspired every day by everyone who gets up and does this important work on behalf of our children and our families in our community. This is a hard fight, but I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work on an issue that could not only help my community, but also the masses," said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, Incoming Executive Director, Moms Demand Action.
