Salaries Could Increase For Morristown Police Officers
An ordinance addressing salary adjustments for specific positions within the Morristown Police Bureau was introduced by the town council.
MORRISTOWN, NJ — Some town employees might see a bump in pay after the Morristown Council introduced an ordinance on April 25 adjusting salaries and compensation.
The introduced ordinance affects certain members of the Morristown Bureau of Police, specifically three positions within the police department.
Under the proposed five-year contract laid out in the ordinance, the salary for a police sergeant at the top of his pay grade would increase incrementally from $122,098 to $135,759 by 2025.

The pay for a lieutenant with comparable service would rise from $135,750 to $152,051. In addition, captains in the top bracket will see their pay rise from $153,160 to $170,297.
According to the ordinance, the Town of Morristown and Morristown PBA Local #43, the union that represents the local police officers, recently reached a Memorandum of Agreement covering the years Jan. 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2025.

The ordinance was introduced unanimously by the town council and will be subjected to a public hearing at the council meeting on Tuesday, May 9, after which the council will vote to adopt it.
According to the agenda, the May 9 meeting will also include the first discussion of the proposed budget for 2023, which will be presented by Mayor Timothy Dougherty.
Property taxes in New Jersey are made up of three parts: school, municipal and county. Here’s how that played out in Morristown last year:
- School – 50.2%
- Municipal – 38.4%
- County – 11.5%
Earlier this spring, the Morris School District Board of Education unanimously passed its $152,250,450 budget for the 2023-24 school year. Morristown's new school budget will result in some tax relief for the typical homeowner.
The average Morristown homeowner will pay about $36 less per year in school taxes for a home valued at $357,595.
According to representatives of the school district, the tax levy will rise by 2 percent for the upcoming academic year. The local tax levy provides almost 67 percent of the funding, with the state and federal governments contributing 17 percent each.
