Threat Sent To NJ-11 Candidate Jay Webber's Office

Breaking: Campaign officials say the note, which threatened Webber's seven children, was sent to his law office.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A letter threatening his children was sent to the workplace of Jay Webber, the Republican candidate for New Jersey's 11th Congressional District.

The envelope contained a threatening letter and a cut-up campaign sign, and was sent to Webber's law office, campaign spokesperson Ronica Cleary said. The letter lambasted Webber's political views, before threatening his children.

"You BETTER hope you don't win! Or else. How many kids do you have.... 7? Unlucky 7," the note reads in part. "This is what we think of you. Time to get out of politics!"

The letter has been reported to law enforcement, Cleary said.

"We are thankful for the immediate responsiveness and support of law enforcement in light of this threat. Vehement criticism of a candidate on issues of public concern is part of politics, but when anonymous individuals menace a candidate and his family, things have gotten out of hand," said Cleary in a statement.

The campaign between Webber and Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been tense for the past several months, with both candidates trading barbs and engaging in three heated debates.

"This is absolutely appalling. No one who decides to run for public office should feel that, by doing so, they are putting their family in danger. I condemn this in the strongest terms and hope law enforcement determines who was behind this and holds them accountable," said Sherrill, who is also a parent.

Anyone with information about the threat is asked to contact R.O.I.C. Watch and Warning Unit at (609) 963-6900, option 1.
