Train Station Redevelopment Plan To Be Presented At Morristown Meeting

Phil Abramson, Morristown's Town Planner, will be presenting the redevelopment plan on Tuesday, Aug. 8, according to the posted agenda.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Morristown's train station may soon see further improvements, as the town council prepares to hear an update on the Train Station Redevelopment Project.

According to the council meeting agenda, Phil Abramson, Morristown's Town Planner, will be presenting the update during the Aug. 8 meeting, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

As of Monday evening, no information about the current stage of the redevelopment project had been made public.

Last December, Morristown was awarded $86,000 from a Transit Village Program Grant from Governor Murphy's office.

The Division of Local Aid and Economic Development's Transit Village Grant program awarded grants to New Jersey municipalities designated as Transit Villages for non-traditional transportation-related projects.

Morristown was chosen as one of the municipalities across the state to receive critical funding to improve access to local transportation and the areas surrounding public facilities.

The grant money, according to the Morristown Council, was intended to fund the second phase of the train station redevelopment plan.

One of the main projects that the town had focused on was adding more lighting to the train trestle. Last winter, Council member Robert Iannaccone stated that there was a major concern for pedestrian and road safety, saying that "it's another not safe intersection, particularly at night you can't really see people."

Town Administrator Jillian Barrick also told the council that the town had previously spent money to add light fixtures to the railroad trestles, but that the placement of the lights had eroded them down to where they are now due to water from the train.

The town had discussed replacing them with freestanding fixtures, and because that area of the sidewalk is wider, there is more room to put freestanding fixtures that would not have the same corrosive effect.

On Tuesday, the council is expected to hear more information on Lackawanna Place Morristown Urban Renewal, LLC's preliminary and final major site plan.

According to the agenda, MHS Architecture created architectural plans and elevations for the project, while Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. created the site plan.
