The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is on Saturday, April 22.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Mark your Spring calendars. It's time for you to safely dispose of your unused and expired prescription medication.

This weekend, several Morris County law enforcement agencies will join forces as part of a nationwide effort to reduce drug abuse in local communities.

Operation Take Back Saturday is being supported by the county prosecutor's and sheriff's offices, as well as the police departments of Morris Plains and Morris Township.

"This program has proven to be an effective method for the appropriate discarding of unused and unwanted medications," said Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll and Sheriff James Gannon in a joint statement. "We applaud our citizens for their proactive steps in helping to curb the abuse of prescription medications."

Residents that are unable to visit any of the drop-off sites can also go to one of the permanent locations around Morris County at any time, which are all listed on the sheriff's office website.

Proper disposal of medications also reduces environmental risks, as medicines flushed down the drain can inadvertently enter drinking water supplies.

Morris County disposed of 139 pounds of unused or expired drugs during an Operation Take Back collection last October.
