Video: 'Patch Takes It Off,' Yoga With Erica Jung

This fitness phenom shows us how to incorporate her routine into a healthy lifestyle.

There is a comedy bit by Kevin James, the former "King of Queens," where he talks about being a big man and how easy it is for him to break a sweat. Someone sees him, drenched, and asks if he had just been running, or had been up in the attic.

"No, I peeled an orange," he says (paraphrased). "Like, an hour ago."

That is kind of how I felt during my yoga session with the beautiful and talented Erica Jung, who teaches Saturday yoga sessions at . I am to at Wellness on the Green. But, I was surprised to discover I was actually a stranger to some of what Jung performed during the 12:15 p.m. class.

Yes, I am familiar with Downward Facing Dog and Shavasana (the blissful ending, where you get to lay down and close your eyes. Of course, I am familiar), but there were other techniques this lifelong athlete was asking us to perform. Like a skilled guitarist burning through the fretboard, Jung made standing on one's head look easy (and, it actually was done by a couple of her students Saturday–not me. Check out the video!).

One thing Jung emphasized to me, however, was to not feel self-conscious about what I was doing (or, in the case of the standing on the head, not doing). In the video, Jung notes she usually gives anything new three tries. The first try, you feel highly self-conscious. The second time, less so. The third, all of that washes away, and you can tell for certain if this is something for you or not.

And, despite the oceans of sweat given over to my yoga mat on Saturday, I did not walk away from Jung's session feeling bad about myself. Far from it. Not only was she an excellent teacher of the craft, she was a partner, which has not always been the case with other teachers. She may be far, far (far) ahead of me in terms of athletic acumen, but if she thinks any higher of herself for that, she doesn't let it show.

So, thanks, Erica Jung, for your great class! I plan on returning, even after my has concluded. Hopefully, eventually, I won't sweat so much that I slide off my mat mid-pose. There's always winter.
