A Big Day for the Newark Fire Department

The week ahead on Newark Patch.

Essex County officials will be honoring James McGreevey, the former New Jersey governor, during a ceremony Monday in Newark. The 55-year-old, who had been married to Ironbound native Dina Matos and stepped down from office amid scandal in 2004, famously admitted that he “is a gay American.” McGreevey, who in many eyes has rehabilitated his tattered reputation after earning a divinity degree and becoming a counselor to prison inmates, will be receiving the county’s LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexua, Transgender, Queer) Pride of Essex Award.

On Tuesday, the Newark Fire Department welcomes its latest recruit class and will also host a promotion ceremony for several officers. Grammy Award-winning Singer Wyclef Jean will perform the National Anthem.

The Newark Municipal Council is scheduled to hear legal opinions Tuesday regarding the rules governing the appointment of the next president of the municipal council, which has not had one since Donald Payne Jr. left office last year to join the US Congress. The council presidency is  truly a hot seat this year -- the holder of the office would likely succeed Mayor Cory Booker on an interim basis should Booker be elected to the Senate during a special election in October. The acting mayor serve at least until spring 2014, when an election will be held for a full four-year term.
