Newark Among US Cities That Need 'Most COVID Vaccinations': Study

NEWARK, NJ — Newark ranks high among large U.S. cities that will need “the most initial coronavirus vaccinations,” a recent study claims.

On Thursday, financial information website WalletHub released a list of "Cities That Need the Most Initial Vaccinations Against COVID-19." Researchers ranked 93 of the nation’s most populated municipalities based on factors such as each city’s share of frontline health care workers, nursing home residents, essential workers and residents diagnosed with various diseases.

New Jersey’s largest city, Newark, ranked 10th-highest on the list. Detroit was at the top of the list, followed by Cleveland, Birmingham, Memphis, Louisville, Toledo, Baton Rouge, Buffalo and Cincinnati.

According to WalletHub, here’s how the Brick City rated on the study.

Initial Need for COVID-19 Vaccinations in Newark (1=Most; 47=Avg.):

• 13th – Share of Health Care Workers
• 3rd – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease
• 6th – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Cardiovascular Disease
• 3rd – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Diabetes
• 13th – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• 6th – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Asthma
• 5th – Share of Adult Population Diagnosed with Hypertension
• 21st – Share of Obese Adult Population
• 6th – Share of Frontline Industries Workers

“Vaccination is crucial for reopening the economy because if a significant portion of the population is vaccinated, it will drastically slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and thus make public spaces safer,” WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez said.

“Once we have a wide rollout of a vaccine, we can proceed to a full reopening, which should inject a lot of money into the economy and give businesses the resources they need to hire again,” Gonzalez added.
