Newark Man Opened Fire On Crowd, Found Guilty Of Murder

One person was killed and several others were wounded, Essex County prosecutors said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An Essex County man has been found guilty of murder and several other crimes after he “opened fire” on a crowded street in Newark two years ago, killing one person and wounding several others, prosecutors said.

Antuane Gregory, 46, of Newark, was convicted of first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting, which took place on April 15, 2023.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident began when a verbal argument started outside on the 400-block of Leslie Street. During the dispute, Gregory pulled out a handgun and fired at a group of five people standing on the sidewalk.

Corey Beasley, 43, of Newark, was struck four times: once in the back, once in his right leg and twice in the left leg. He died from his injuries.

Three other victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds, but survived their injuries. A fifth person was shot at – but wasn’t hit, prosecutors said.

The jury returned its verdict on Oct. 10, following a six-day trial.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 21. Gregory faces a minimum of 30 years to life in prison. He must serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole, authorities said.

Prosecutors noted that Gregory is currently serving a five-year federal sentence for escape from custody, imposed in July 2024.
