Newark Taverns Named Among The ‘Best Sports Bars’ In US

NEWARK, NJ — A pair of local taverns in Essex County have been named as the top sports bar in New Jersey in a new ranking list.

McGovern's Tavern and Krug’s Tavern in Newark were among the highest-rated watering holes in the Garden State, according to BetUS, which ranked bars based on average Google review scores, cheapest beer and lowest prices for a hamburger.

The ranking placed McGovern's 87th on the overall national list. The popular local watering hole has made "best of" lists before, recently being named as one of "America's Best Bars." Read More: One Of ‘America’s Best Bars’ Reopens In Newark: McGovern's Tavern

The tavern's website gives some background about its long-running history in the community:

"It was 1936 at McGovern’s Tavern in Newark New Jersey. At the time there weren’t many Irish establishments in the area and it became a quickly a central fixture in the community. Originally from Swanlinbar, County Cavan, Ireland, FM envisioned a place where members of the Irish community could enjoy live Irish music and dance when he opened the doors. He couldn’t have known he was creating a place that would become an institution on both sides of the Atlantic."

Meanwhile, the ranking placed Krug’s at 95th on the overall national list. Here’s what researchers had to say about the popular local spot:

“With an exceptional rating of 4.6 on Google reviews, Krug's Tavern in Newark, is the best sports bar in New Jersey, and the #95 ranked sports bar in the U.S. According to Google reviews, Krug's Tavern is a go-to sports bar and location for after work libations. The affordable prices, large portions, great tasting food, and beer are what allow Krug's Tavern to stand out as the best sports bar in New Jersey, and a top 100 sports bar in the nation.”

Krug’s is located at 118 Wilson Avenue in Newark. The family-owned and operated business opened in 1932. It was founded by Frank and Laura Krug and has remained in the same location now being run by the fourth generation.

The report was issued as millions of basketball fans get ready for the first round of “March Madness.”

“As sports bars play a pivotal role in American sports culture, we wanted to uncover the best establishments in the U.S. for sports fanatics to visit and enjoy the Big Dance,” said Andres Vargas, head content editor at BetUS.

“Our rankings uncovered the best sports bar establishments in various U.S. cities, combining Google ratings with affordability together, to showcase the best spots for enjoying a beer and a burger during the biggest month of collegiate basketball,” Vargas said.
