Special Election News and a Memorial for a Fallen Officer
The week ahead on Newark Patch.

We’ll be stopping in on a vigil Monday in memory of Newark police officer Melvin Lisojo, who was killed in the line of duty a decade ago. Early on the morning of June 24, 2003, Lisojo was responding to a call of shots fired when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver at Bergen Street and 18th Avenue. The vigil will be held at the intersection of Dickerson and Duryea streets, which was renamed in honor of Lisojo, the first Hispanic officer to die in the line of duty in Newark.
We’ll also be checking in with the clerk’s office to see if anyone has pulled paperwork related to the special election for a vacant seat n the Newark Municipal Council. The seat, previously held by Donald Payne Jr., who left the council after being elected to Congress in November 2012. Whoever wins the election in November will serve the remainder of Payne’s term, which expires July 1, 2014. An election for a full four-year term to the seat will be held a few months before, in May 2014.
