Newark 350 Committee Chairman Honored By United Way Of Essex-Hudson

The Ashby Community Service Award is a distinguished recognition that embodies what it means to be a community leader.

From The United Way of Essex and West Hudson: On Tuesday, December 6th, the United Way of Essex and West Hudson (UWEWH) hosted the 25th Anniversary Ashby Dinner at the Newark Club where they honored Junius Williams, Director of the Abbott Leadership Institute and Chairman of the Newark 350 Celebration Committee and celebrated the legacy of American historian and author the late Dr. Clement Price.

United Way of Essex and West Hudson’s William Ashby Community Service Award is a distinguished recognition that embodies what it means to be a community servant leader. As the first African-American social worker in the state of New Jersey, William Ashby was the quintessential community change agent. He was instrumental in founding the Urban League of Essex County, the Newark Welfare Federation and Community Chest, forerunner to United Way of Essex and West Hudson, and the Fuld Neighborhood House. He was also a co-founder of the Newark Preservation and Landmarks Committee. In creating the Ashby Award, UWEWH sought to honor Mr. Ashby's legacy and recognize those individuals whose contributions to our community reflect the ideals of the award's namesake.
