Power Slowly Returning to New Brunswick, All Major Roads Clear

City officials say that power is returning to New Brunswick, but slowly.

On Wednesday morning, the boil water advisory was lifted. Cpt. J.T. Miller of New Brunswick police said the quality of water wasn't dangerous over the last two days, but the advisory was issued as a precaution in the event of problems with the water supply.

A state of emergency remains in place in New Brunswick, but drivers are permitted back on city roads.

"Everyone should exercise caution when driving or walking in the City, power lines and trees are down, treat intersections with traffic lights out as a four-way stop," said an email from the mayor's office on Wednesday morning.

New Brunswick Public Schools are closed Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Miller said that no storm-related fatalities or major fires were reported in New Brunswick. A water rescue occurred on Route 18 on Monday from a submerged car, but the occupants were successfully rescued, he said.

City spokesman Russell Marchetta said the city has not set up any charging stations for residents to charge their electronic devices, and due to the power restorations, do not plan to establish any at this time.

The city shelter at Lord Stirling Community School, 101 Redmond St., remains open and has power, Marchetta said.

On Wednesday morning, power had been restored to city hall. Miller said that the power level in the city was still less than 50 percent.

According to the city, recycling pickup for businesses has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. Nov. 3.

In New Brunswick, Halloween has been postponed until Wednesday, Nov. 7. 

On Wednesday morning, Gov. Chris Christie signed an order postponing Halloween throughout the state until Monday, Nov. 5.
