Suspect in Easton Avenue Shooting Also Charged in Connection with Hale Street Slaying

Darryll Underwood is jailed on $1.5 million bail at the Middlesex County jail.

An Edison man who is currently jailed on charges connected with a Sept. 21 Easton Avenue shooting was charged on Thursday in connection with a separate shooting on Oct. 6 that killed a 21-year-old North Brunswick woman and wounded a 28-year-old man.

According to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, Darryll Underwood, 19, has been charged with the murder of Jessica Torres, 21, of North Brunswick and the attempted murder of the unidentified 28-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld by the Prosecutor's Office at this time.

He has also been charged with possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and possession of an illegal handgun, the release said.

The unidentified male victim was targeted by the shooter, who opened fire on him and Torres at approximately 2:13 a.m. as they stood outside the Progressive Masonic Temple on Hale Street, investigators have determined.

Both Torres and the male victim were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where Torres was pronounced dead.

Underwood has been held at the Middlesex County Jail since Oct. 16, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Bail is set at $1.5 million.
