Bergen Sheriff Warns Against Officer-Impersonation Phone Scam

The scam involves the 'spoofing' of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office's phone number.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — There is a phone scam targeting Bergen County residents by "spoofing" the Bergen County Sheriff's Office phone number, authorities said.

Sheriff Anthony Cureton said his office knows about the scam. The calls appear they are coming from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office general phone number.

"The Bergen County Sheriff's Office, IRS, Social Security [Administration], or any other legitimate business or government agency will never demand payment with the thread of arrest via telephone," Cureton said. "If you receive a call of this nature, hang up immediately."
