Letter to the Editor: 'Urge [Gov. Christie] to veto ... legislation [placing] Liberty State Park under ... auspices of ... Meadowlands'

"If you... haven't experienced ... Liberty State Park, you better get there soon. A bill on the Gov.'s desk could hand [the] landmark over."

Dear Editor,

If you live in Northern NJ and haven’t experienced beautiful Liberty State Park, you better get there soon. A bill on the Governor’s desk could hand this Jersey City landmark over to private developers.

Jersey City Mayor Fulop, NJ conservation groups, the Friends of Liberty State Park, and private citizens all over our fair state are up in arms over this legislation that would put the park under control of the Meadowlands Commission, thereby allowing it to “bypass the DEP and make decisions about the park on its own,” according to Scott Fallon’s article in last Wednesday’s Record.

It also would give the Governor greater control over LSP. Right now, most of the 1100 acres of this lovely place is open space, with about 300 acres for public recreation, and breathtaking views of Liberty Harbor and the Statue of Liberty, belongs to the People.

If the Governor signs it, do you think it will remain this way?

Please phone Governor Christie’s office today at 609-292-6000 and urge him to veto the portion of this new legislation that would put Liberty State Park under the auspices of the Meadowlands, thereby making it easier for it to be turned over to private developers.

Sincerely,

Dianne Douthat, Wayne, NJ
