NEW MILFORD, NJ — A borough man was charged with animal cruelty after he tried killing two raccoons, police said Tuesday.

Patrick Biondo, 54, was arrested after police went to his home Tuesday at about 4:15 p.m. when he reported repeatedly stabbing two raccoons that were in a cage on his deck, police said.

Biondo told police that he was trying to kill the raccoons because they were "a constant nuisance on his deck," police said.

Police saw that the raccoons were "in poor health" and had stab wounds and burns on them, authorities said.

Police said Biondo poured bleach on the animals and stabbed them. He was charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Representatives from TYCO Animal Control got the animals and made sure received medical treatment. They are expected to survive.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Animal Cruelty Task Force and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals assisted police with their investigation.
