Progress of Development Applauded at Huffman Koos Site Groundbreaking Ceremony

After four years, ground is finally broken Wednesday on the old Huffman Koos site.

Acknowledging the efforts of the mayor and council that preceeded him, Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said that getting to the groundbreaking was "a long hard process." Senator Bob Gordon applauded progress on the long-awaited commercial redevelopment project at the site of the former Huffman Koos furniture store off Route 4 in River Edge during Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks significant progress on this redevelopment project," Gordon said. "The new retail space slated for this site will help to revitalize the area, which serves as the gateway to the borough of River Edge.”

The new commercial retail project, approved by the River Edge planning board in 2007, took over four years to break ground. According to officials, the project experienced delays due in part to remediation required at the site where a dry cleaning business was once located. The new project will consist of three retail buildings at the site located off Main Street and Kinderkamack Road--two of the stores will be Total Wine, relocating from its current spot and CVS.

“I look forward to seeing this work move forward and to new tenants filling the retail space," Gordon said. "This is good news for the residents of River Edge who have waited for this project to take shape.”
