New Providence's Annual Trout Fishing Derby Set For Saturday

Bring your rod & reel to fish for trout of varying sizes stocked in the Oakwood Park pond. Prizes will be awarded at 11 a.m. to participants age 15 and under who catch one of the six big lunkers!

The New Providence P.B.A. Local #132 and New Providence Recreation will hold their annual Trout Fishing Contest at this Saturday, April 14 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. 

Bring your rod & reel to fish for trout of varying sizes stocked in the Oakwood Park pond. Prizes, generously donated by the PBA, will be awarded at 11 a.m. to participants age 15 and under who catch one of the six big lunkers!

Fees are $5/person or $7/family. On-line registration is available at www.newprov.org/recreation or in person at the Recreation Department.

and had the opportunity to win prizes for their catches.

“It’s just to get the families out, to teach children how to fish. There are children that have no exposure to being out and fishing with their families,” said Patricia Kummer, a coordinator from the Recreation Department, during the 2011 derby. “It’s a nice time and it’s a day to kind of sit back and relax.”

Only fishermen between 16 and 69 years old are required to have a NJ fishing license with a trout stamp. Fishing license information can be found at the State’s Division of Fish and Wildlife website: http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/als/websalesintro.htm.

Adults without a license are welcome to accompany their children but are not permitted to cast their own line.
