Talks Continue on Downtown Parking Solution

New Providence’s Economic Development Committee reports progress on discussions to solve downtown parking woes.

Councilman Gary Kapner said the committee met last week to discuss solutions to an issue that has impacted shoppers parking in the Village Center lot, according to the Alternative Press.

“It was an excellent meeting to start the process of finding solutions for our downtown district and coming up with an open access plan that works for consumers, residents, business and property owners,” Kapner said.

A “no parking” sign at Village Center was taken down in August but could be erected again if the property owner, tenants and the borough cannot work out an arrangement, according to nj.com.

The sign had gone up after center tenants complained about shoppers parking there to frequent businesses not in the shopping center.

Center tenants pay for maintenance of the lot, but the burden is not distributed equally, the report said.

The Economic Development Committee will meet again Oct. 21. Meanwhile, Kapner and Councilman Bob Robinson have scheduled meetings with property owners that border the Village Center to ensure their viewpoints are represented in discussions.
