Training Session to Help Kids With Special Needs

The New Providence Memorial Library will host a training session for those interested in working with children with special needs.

The session, led by certified behaviorist Eileen Wotanowski, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at the library, 377 Elkwood Ave. Completion will qualify attendees to work in any programs offered by TryCan, a collaboration of several nearby communities that offers an array of recreation programs for children with special needs or those who need special accommodation.  

Attendees will learn how various developmental disabilities such as autism, ADHD and visual and hearing impairments impact how children play and learn.  They will also learn techniques to work well and interact with TryCAN program participants so as to help them have enjoyable sports and recreation experiences.  

A certificate of completion will be awarded to those who attend, and attendees will be able to work as a Peer Mentor volunteer in any TryCAN special needs programs or in programs offered by others with which TryCAN is affiliated.  Attendees who go on to mentor will receive credit for community service for any hours spent working in TryCAN programs.  

This class is for children 11 years of age and older.
