2013-14 School Starting Dates Differ for Oakland Students
Dates to keep in mind for the approaching school year.

Back to school, already? School starts in less than a month for Oakland children, but some of the dates on the recently 2012-13 schedules differ depending on where students report to class.
Kindergarteners through eighth graders in the Oakland public schools will report for their first day of class on Wednesday, Sept. 4, which will be immediately followed by a day off for Rosh Hashanah.
High school students at Ramapo and Indian Hills will have an extra two days before their classes start, beginning after the holiday and reporting to school for the first time Sept. 6.

The high school district will make up that extra day by keeping the schools open on election day, which is a professional day—where only teachers come in—at the Oakland elementary schools and middle school. All the Oakland schools, save Dogwood, are listed as voting locations for the Nov. 5 general election.
According to the current schedule, students will remain in class for the Oct. 16 special election to fill the seat vacated by the recently deceased Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

November will be the lightest month for elementary and middle school students, with only 12 full school days. In addition to election day, the schools will be closed Nov. 7-8 for the state teachers convention and Nov. 28-29 for Thanksgiving, with three half days for parent-teacher conferences Nov. 19-21.
Both calendars have a tentative final school day June 23, allowing three days for weather related closings. Class time missed in excess of the three days will be deducted from the end April break (Apr. 7-11).
